A conversation first

Let’s understand before we suggest.

Your requirement may be about investments in India, money already lying here, an existing portfolio, a property-related financial decision, banking, taxation, or simply understanding what needs attention and what does not. Bringing money to India also deserves a tax conversation before an investment conversation. The act of remitting your own money through normal banking channels is not, by itself, the same thing as earning taxable income in India; however, what the money represents, your residential status, the account it is credited to, and what you subsequently earn or invest in can all affect the tax position. For example, interest on eligible NRE accounts is generally exempt from Indian income tax while the prescribed non-resident conditions continue to be met, whereas interest on NRO accounts is taxable in India. Income and gains from investments made after the money reaches India may also have their own Indian tax treatment, and the country where you live may have separate reporting or tax rules. Rather than put a long list of NRI services on this page, we would prefer to understand your situation first. Tell us where you are based, what you are trying to do, where the money is coming from and what you already have in India. We can then identify the financial questions — and where required, involve the appropriate tax professional before you move or invest the money.

Before you move the money, understand the route. Before you invest it, understand the tax.
